Why Do People Hate Mondays?

Do you ever get the Monday blues?

Hi everyone,

Do you ever wonder why some people dislike Monday so much? Are you one of these people? Well, if you are, don’t worry, because it doesn’t mean you are a negative person… there are actual scientific reasons why Monday is not your favourite day.


Since many people don’t get enough sleep during the week, they often try to make up for it on weekend by ‘sleeping in’. But, this confuses our body (or what we call our ‘body clock). Even just sleeping an hour or two more; for example if you get up at 7am during the week but on the weekend get up at 9am… this is enough to confuse your poor body! This extra sleep can actually make you MORE tired at the start of the week. So even though you think that you should be well rested on a Monday morning because you ‘caught up’ on your sleep on the weekend… the extra sleep makes it harder for you to get out of bed! Confused? Me too!  I guess we need to start setting the alarm for the same time every day!

A Sudden Change

When scientists have actually recorded people’s emotions, they found that Mondays are no less depressing than Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday… BUT people always remember Monday as the worst day of the week. This is because there is a bigger emotional change from Sunday (part of the happy weekend) to Monday (the first day back to work or school). So this sudden change is what makes Monday feel like your least favourite day!

Social Life

Humans are generally social animals (ie. We like to be around other people we know; friends and family). So if you have been enjoying your weekend socialising with all your friends or family, and on Monday morning suddenly have to go back to work or school, this is another reason you might feel unhappy. BUT if you speak to your co-workers or classmates when you arrive at work or school, this will make you feel happier .


If you feel less healthy on a Monday… it is because you probably are! Generally speaking, most people spend the weekend enjoying themselves, which could mean drinking and eating things that are not particularly good for you. This can also contribute to your Monday feeling, since you might feel guilty about your weekend activities.

So, don’t despair if you are feeling a little sad on Monday… It’s normal… AND it’s been proven by Science!
